Fun Run 2015

We have been training hard for the "Fun Run" in Rimu Hub and we're very proud of our results. Just look at that results table! 

Taylor couldn't run, so he took photos and created this video on the iPad. Visit his blog and leave him a comment. I think he did a creative job which captured the efforts of many students.

Back in the hub, we reflected on the efforts of ourselves and others. It was wonderful to hear how well our students recognize the PRIDE in others. Here is a video of Hannah interviewing Liske about the Fun Run.

Rugby - Karl Lowe Boots Game

Parkvale School now has the Karl Lowe boots back!

Recently, there was a great effort from the Parkvale School 1st XV in the annual Karl Lowe Boots Game. They had a tough game against Te Mata School (as always) and this year Parkvale came out on top, with a score of 27-22.

Well done to all the players who put in the hard yards and showed Parkvale PRIDE in the game. They made their coaches and their school very proud!

A huge thank you to all the supporters who braved the cold and wet to cheer us on.

I would like to thank you for your efforts and the time you guys gave up to get this team together and to train us. As myself I think you guys have made me a much better player than I was before. As the team I am sure we all appreciated what you guys did for us.

To conclude I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for all the years I been in the 1st 15. You guys are amazing. Once again thank you.

The Karl Lowe Boots

Rippa Rugby National Qualifiers

The Parkvale Rippa Rugby A Team competed in the Tremains Hawke's’ Bay National Qualifier tournament on Thursday 25th of June. The team contained four Rimu students; Hugh, Cameron, Kiana and Keighan. Our team faced a tough draw on a freezing day and played with spirit and teamwork to finish second to Frimley in our pool and just miss out on the semi finals.

In game one, we faced the Napier champions Arthur Miller. After a slow start, we came back well to draw 3-3, with a try to Hugh Kilsby and two tries to Caleb Johnston. Game two was against Wairoa and we played a solid all round team game to win 4-1. Leilani Williams scored our first two tries, followed by a try to Kiana Pohe and another try to Caleb Johnston. Against Frimley, we got down 3-0, before two terrific tries by our captain Hugh Kilsby on either side of the half got us back to 3-2. Frimley came back strong and were deserving winners 5-2.

I was proud of our team who played with heart and never gave up throughout the day. They represented Parkvale with skill and P.R.I.D.E. Congratulations to Tiaho who upset Frimley in a tense, closely fought final. We wish them all the best for the Nationals in the Wellington.

Te Reo Kori 2015 Nationals

Congratulations to all of the students who participated with such PRIDE last week at the Māori hand games tournament. Parkvale won for having the most children registered to play the games. Ezra was Parkvale's top individual prizewinner, placed 2nd in Hipitoitoi overall. He tino pai, Ezra!

Matariki Workshops: Kite Making

Tomorrow is the Māori New Year, Matariki. This week, Nga Rakau Nui hubs have been attending fabulous Matariki workshops. On Friday, Rimu will be having our turn. Today some lucky students from Rimu Hub also got to attend workshops with Tōtara hub. These are workshops which are not available on Friday. A huge thank you to Mrs Hardaker who organised the workshops, and also to all the amazing adults from our Parkvale community who are running or contributing to the workshops.

Easter Writing Competition Winner!

In the last week of term one, we had an Easter Egg Competition. Here are the details:

Easter Egg Competition - 100% independent

Write a description of your perfect Easter Egg, think carefully about the words you choose to describe it, don't forget to punctuate your sentences.

Draw a picture- either digitally or non-digitally.

There were many examples of rich descriptive writing from our students. In a tough competition, Connor came out the winner! His super yummy creative writing is below, as well as his digitally created illustration. Enjoy!

I pick up the dazzling  Easter egg and  gaze at the awesome blue and orange tinfoil cover with an excited expression on my face . The blue and orange tin foil peels  off so easily it is hard to believe it was made by a human. This is the moment, I thought to myself. Time to eat it.  Chomp! The brittle chocolate shell surrenders to my destructive teeth. As I look inside the egg my eyes widen. Caramel,  marshmallow, and “wait whats this” I say, as I stare straight at some thick, oozy stuff sorta the same texture as caramel. But the colour! It isn't a colour known to the human race at all. It’s sorta green in a way, but so different from green at the same time! This is a weird but delicious Easter egg. I take another little nibble and what I see is nearly making my eyeballs explode into tiny different fragments and go flying across the universe . There is fizzy. In the egg. Fizzy in an Easter egg. Can you hear me, FIZZY. It’s the same greenish colour as the other stuff. “Well here goes” I say drinking the fizzy and using the chocolate as a cup and guess what? It is the best thing I have tasted in my whole life. This egg was not created on planet earth. Could be Jupiter? Maybe Mars? Nah, it’s from a different galaxy, I assure myself.

I am right. Twenty five years later scientists discover another galaxy with weird eggs  floating around as they please. But they also find out that they were live creatures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walkathon

At the end of term one, we had our Walkathon. Well done to all the students and especially those who raised money for their camp costs!

For the Walkathon, we walked in two of hub day groups joined together. It was great to see the students encouraging each other and walking together as a team.

Highlights From Our Summer!

This is the first post of our Rimu Learning Hub blog. To celebrate, us, that is the three teachers, Mrs Love, Miss Plimmer and I, have shared a holiday highlight photo. We all look forward to a year full of highlights in our new learning hub!

My highlight was watching my eldest daughter Estelle drive a pony at the Kidz Kartz trotting races at Cambridge Raceway. This photo shows her just before her first race. She did so well and I was so proud!

I went to Speedway and watched my Dad race at the World Invitation 240's in Rotorua. This is a picture of my Dad's car.

Jono and I both received Surfcaster fishing rods. We spent 5 entire days casting and swimming. This is a picture of the only thing I caught.
